Following on from an artist residency in Florence Italy as a John Kinross Scholar from the Royal Scottish Academy I started making action inspired works during my Masters Degree at Grays School of Art in Aberdeen Scotland in 1998. Although I studied Painting and Drawing at the University of Natal in Pietermaritzburg, Republic of South Africa for several years my work took on a more physical approach during my studies in Scotland. I attributed this to a desire to explore the relationship between images and three dimensional spaces. This notion or desire, to imbue the work with an idea of the real experience has continued through my work since. Although these ideas have taken on a very sculptural and action based form all the resulting art works remain 2-D. These works form two groups namely Films and Installations.
FILMS Format
- All DVD
Merge: 6 min 2000.
Permission was granted by the local Ranger to take cultivated Maram grass
from a site outside Balmeadie along the Aberdeenshire coastline and plant
it on a beach further down the road in ladder shapes from the waters edge
to the tops of the dunes where the grass is used in conservation. This
area of the Scottish countryside has featured heavily in the news recently
as Donald Trump wishes to build near the original site of this installation.
Wash: 2.5 min approx. 2001.
Wash is the first film work that I made during The Fire Station Residency
in London 2001 - 2004, where I was producing work with the support of
a stipend from Acme Studios, London, artist in residence programme.
Monkey: 3.5 min 2005.
Monkey is the result of a very large installation of approximately 5000
photographs thoughout London. This performance work took place during
the summers of 2003 - 2005 and was made with the support of a Digital
artist bursary from ArtsAdmin, London 2002. Monkey premiered at the Live
Art development Agency, East End Collaborations in 2005 and subsequently
headlined in the film section of Fresh Festival of Live Art, Winter 2007,
curated by Richard Kingdom.
